As I mentioned in a response to a comment on the previous page, Surat is in Gujarat, so Gujarati would be the most common language spoken in this city and the surrounding area. But Gujarat is part of the much larger Mughal Empire, which is ruled by Persian-speaking Muslims descended from Genghis Khan and Timur “the Lame.” More on them later.
